Who needs therapy? I have Scooba!

“My husband and I have figured out a really good system about the housework: neither one of us does it”

-Dottie Archibald

“Housework is a treadmill from futility to oblivion with stop-offs at tedium and counter productivity.”

-Erma Bombeck

My first experience with mopping dates back to about 1989. I was working part time at a Radio Shack where there was a lot of snow...and when snow melts you get a slushy mess that you have to clean every 5 minutes a customer walks in the store. At Christmas time this becomes a nightmare that never ends.

My manager at the time, a former Navy man, didn't care that much for my mopping skills and proceeded to give me a lesson in the proper way to swab a deck...er...mop a floor. From then on, every time I've handled a mop, I'm taken back to the worst job I've ever had...and the longest six months of my life.

But alas...thanks to iRobot, makers of the wondrous robot vacuum, Roomba...handling a mop is a thing of the past...and no longer will I have to endure bad flashbacks in exchange for clean floors.

Seriously...a lot of people ask me if this thing works. It seems like a ridiculous item to have...a floor washing machine...but ask yourself this:

Do you have a lot of hard floors that require mopping?
Do they often need cleaning?
What's your time worth?

Now I'm not saying Scooba is perfect for everyone, but there are a lot of reasons one can fall in love with a device like this.

For one thing, while it seems like a lot of hassle to prep a machine to clean your floors, once you get the hang of it, you can have it up and running within a couple of minutes.

Another great benefit is that while it does require a specific DRM'd cleaner from Clorox, it isn't that expensive, and it actually makes the floors smell clean and fresh.

But does it really work?

Yes it does. To prove it I went out to the patio and grabbed a handful of something that often finds itself tracked onto the kitchen floor...and that's potting soil. First I got it wet and then I smeared it onto the floor and let it dry. One of the most common things anyone tracks on a floor is dirt...so why not go all the way and muddy it up.

To prep the Scooba you need three things.

1. You'll need a charged Scooba battery
2. You'll need the Scooba Clorox cleaning fluid and measuring cup.
3. You'll need the Scooba water tank that holds the clean and dirty water.

First, fill the measuring cup with the right amount of fluid.

Second, pour the fluid into the "clean" chamber.

Third, fill up the remaining space of the clean tank with hot or cold water (I'm told it doesn't matter).

Next, you want to insert the battery and snap it into place. Place the water tank into the arm that holds it. Now just close the Scooba.

Turn the Power button on.

Press the Clean button.

And leave.

Scooba will now go on it's merry way cleaning up the filthy mess that you've made on your beautiful floors.

When it is all clean, simply remove the water tank and the filter and rinse them out.

That's it.

I know what you're thinking...

"But Supreme Med Hed...we're skeptical...we need proof!"

I anticipated that...and that's why I took the following shots...not for the faint of heart I'm afraid.

As you can see the brushes pick up a considerable amount of hair and filth. Ugh!

As for why there is so much hair and dirt...I wonder...

scooba12.jpg

Yes this is the dirty water from the tank. Not really something one wants as a cocktail, but as an illustration of how disgusting one's floors can be...ideal.
