VDub in the Haus

The name means "people's car" in German, in which it is pronounced [ˈfɔlksˌvaːgən]. Its German tagline is "Aus Liebe zum Automobil", which is translated as "For the love of the car" - or, "For Love of the People's Cars", as translated by VW in other languages, though in direct translation it reads "Out of love for the car."

We love German cars and we currently own and love an Audi A4. Recently we decided to get an additional car, so we went down to the Audi dealership and took a peek at what was on the lot. However, while we were there I thought to myself...instead of another Audi, why not take a look at what VW has to offer?

Without any pre-conceptions, I compared the base Audi A3 to the Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg Edition. After a lot of research I felt that the Volkswagen was a better value than the Audi...and between the two cars, you were almost paying simply for the name.

So we got the Jetta.

I love it!

I think what put me over the edge was that when you really looked at both cars closely, it actually seemed like you got more car for less money with the Jetta, especially when you compared the standard features that came with the Jetta that were optional on the A3.

I mean at first glance, the cars seem very similar, although the Audi does have slightly more horsepower and is a tad bit faster.

But after that, for me, it always comes down to features. And this is where the Jetta shines.

At that point, you have to ask yourself, is paying an additional $5k+ worth it just to belong to the "Audi Club?" Once you add all the added features, just to match what the Jetta comes with, you have to spend over $7,000.

No thanks.

Don't get me wrong. I still love Audi, but I'm not just about brand...I'm also about value.

As for my thoughts on the Jetta? I actually prefer the Jetta controls to the Audi. I find them simpler to operate and I don't have to take my eyes off the road for very long to make an adjustment.

The stereo sounds pretty good and it has a built in Aux Input for something like an iPod.

The Wolfsburg Edition is a cold weather package (not that I need it). That means special windshield wipers, heated mirrors, heated windshield fluid nozzles, etc.

There are three power outlets (two in the front, one in trunk).

Blinker control stalk with lane change feature (one tap on the lever creates a three-blink sequence)

Powered/Heated Seats

The trunk...is huge!

Rear passenger ventilation for heat and A/C in center console.

Would I ever buy another Audi? Probably, but as a second car, or even a first...the VW Jetta is a lot of value in a good looking package.
